a calamity you can't contain

rinchdressingfinally had a burst of inspiration for chapter 5, which until now, was the only part of the fic that didn't even have a completed outline! but you know what this klapollo fic was missing???? klavdar. obviously. i wasn't sure if i was going romantic or platonic with them, i only knew i was dedicating this chapter to daryan talk. and what's a better time to write 700 words of chapter 5 than when chapter 4 still isn't done and it's midnight and i have an appointment tomorrow morning at 8:30.
“You smoke?”
“Nein, not even once. They were Daryan’s cigarette of choice.” Klavier notes the shock on Apollo’s face. “If I may ask you to reserve your judgments until the end, I’ll explain.”
Apollo nods.
“When you met Daryan… He wasn’t… I don’t want to sound as if I am excusing what he’s done. I simply wish to… contextualize it.” Klavier pauses to get his next sentences in order. “When you met, he was quite rude, ja?”
“Ja.”
“Yes, well. It’s not that that behavior was out of character, for him, it was not. But he wasn’t always like that. You recall I was also rather… intense? during the concert, right? I am sorry for that, by the way.” He looks at Apollo sympathetically. “What I’m trying to say is… You met Daryan at a very stressful time, and that has been your only exposure to him, so it’s reasonable to assume he’s just like that. If you’d only met me that night, I assume you’d have much the same opinion.”
“I think I get what you’re saying. We all get a little more unbearable when stressed, yeah? So tell me about him before that.”
Klavier’s eyes widen in shock. “Usually, people beg me to tell them all the obvious signs he had been a monster all along.” His shoulders slump. “Daryan truly was not some cold blooded killer. Even speaking to him after his arrest—once he calmed down—his motive was rather sympathetic, though I still disagree with how he approached the situation. I understand it though, he wanted to help a sick child, and in a moment of high stress, viewed Herr Letouse to be in the way of that goal.” Klavier grimaces.
“Huh. I don’t think I ever thought of it that way.”
“You assumed it was greed, ja? A spoiled rockstar that just couldn’t get enough money… All the tabloids settled on that too, not that I blame them.” Klavier brushes through his hair with his fingers. “Regardless of what you believe his motivations to be, I’m glad you’re hearing me out. Otherwise, this next part sounds very embarrassing.”
Apollo pushes himself up onto his elbows to listen more intently.
“Daryan was… my first love, as cheesy as it sounds. My best friend, first and foremost, but more than that too. It was… complicated. We never put a name to whatever relationship we had, but we were closer to each other than the rest of the band. He was more important to me than the rest of the world.” Klavier huffs a weak laugh. “That sounds dramatic but, ach, you know me. Eventually we broke it off, about a year before I met you, I believe. But he was still my best friend.”
Apollo is about to respond when Klavier starts talking again. “I guess I didn’t really tell you anything about him, did I? That was part of why we broke it off, actually. I spend far too much time thinking of myself to be a good partner.”
Apollo wants to interject. Klavier has always been a good friend. But really, Apollo doesn’t know how Klavier fares as a partner. He probably never will, and he should probably stop thinking about it so much.
adding the italics after copying and pasting is always so annoying i have GOT to find a way to write people talking weird that isn't so totally reliant on italicizing every other word.
anyways, my girlfriend told me to write in more ema this chapter, which gave me all the inspiration i need to talk about turnabout serenade WAY MORE after this. yay!
